Alright Gents pack the sound of Calgary into their party stone approach

Sometimes the "local" in "local band" is viewed as a pejorative.

Sometimes it's owned with pride.

You can put Calgary indie stone quartet Alright Gents firmly in the latter army camp, as the city in which they live and make their music is equally much a role of who they are as how they sound.

"Information technology sounds very Calgary to me," says singer-guitarist Bricklayer Jenkins of AG's straight-up, catchy-equally-hell, sweetness and crunchy pop-rock delivery as institute on their tasty vi-song EP OK Guys.

"We've taken on a bunch of Calgary personalities," he continues, listing — while sharing a pint with young man frontperson Garrett Thorson — the acts they've fatigued comparisons to, including Napalmpom and The Dudes, with a piddling Cowpuncher and Miesha and the Spanks thrown in for practiced measure out.

And they're happy well-nigh that.

The band, which is rounded out by bassist Brent Rossall and drummer Bill Taylor, accept evolved over three years and three EPs they've released, starting off as what Jenkins describes as a "pretty folksy, easy listening" human activity to where they are now, which is "fun, celebratory" and, higher up all, inclusive R&R political party starters.

The latter is too something they take great pride in, due in part to Jenkins transitioning five years ago, having been assigned female person at nativity and identifying as that until he was in his early on 20s.

"I'd say so," Jenkins says when asked if that'due south an important aspect of AG's sound.

"It doesn't take an obvious touch on the songwriting," Thorson says. "Simply if you step dorsum and take sight of the fact that we always endeavor to take a positive, inclusive spin."

Jenkins agrees. "If there's ever a songwriting session y'all're not going to accept an Alright Gents song that's going to be talking nigh using or abusing women or other minorities, or putting down anyone," he says, with Thorson noting OK Guys is filled with angry, breakdown tunes but nothing that'southward "toxic."

"And I think equally Calgarians and Canadians," Jenkins continues, "I think if you want to produce an album that you lot feel represents Calgary you wouldn't take songs putting down people or beingness hurtful.

"It'southward non our matter." He laughs. "We're similar the Calgary wave — that'due south who we are."

And, once more, it's helped them go ascension stars on the scene, sharing the stages with many of those aforementioned acts to which they are favourably compared, and, on Sunday when they release the new album with a show at Broken Metropolis, other local rock royalty, with The Ramblin' Ambassadors opening for them.

Thorson says they've appreciated the "infant steps" along the way, as the stages and accomplishments accept grown for Alright Gents, with success even spreading outside of the city thanks to a spot on the mainstage for Edmonton's upcoming Pride celebrations.

As to whether or non they truly experience a office of the scene and among the ranks of those other, more established acts, well, while they don't consider themselves all the same on that level, they're slowly working their style into the conversation.

"Nosotros're at the kids table for sure," Jenkins says and laughs.

"Nosotros can see the party through the window," Thorson says.

"And the absurd kids at the tabular array will smile at the states and talk to us a niggling chip, and we're but then starstruck," Jenkins says.

"I think the Calgary scene is super welcoming and super positive, merely we know that, 'OK, we're not quite there yet.'

He smiles. "But infant steps."

Alright Gents release their new EP OK Guys with an all-ages prove Sunday at Broken City.
